Rules to Follow in Portrait Photography

Master the essentials—from light and lens choice to capturing authentic emotion—for portraits that truly connect.

Basic rules by Sinisa Zec Studio

Connect Before You Shoot A great portrait starts with trust. Talk to your subject, make them feel at ease, and let their personality come through naturally.

01 Rule #
Control the Light Soft, diffused light—natural or studio—adds depth and flatters skin. Pay attention to direction and shadows to shape your subject’s features. 02 Rule # Focus on the Eyes The eyes draw the viewer in. Always focus on the eye closest to the camera to create a sharp, emotional connection. 03 Rule # Use the Right Lens for the Job Lenses around 85–135mm compress features beautifully without distortion. Step back, frame carefully, and let the lens do the magic. 04 Rule # Pose with Purpose Guide your subject gently—avoid stiffness. Aim for relaxed, confident poses that express mood, identity, and authenticity.
