The Short Answer: Nikon is moving production of select Z-mount lenses to Vietnam primarily to avoid the steep 25% ‘Section 301’ tariffs on Chinese-made goods. This diversification aims to stabilize the supply chain and manage costs long-term, but it could cause short-term availability issues and price adjustments as Nikon absorbs the transition expenses.
The cost difference is stark: lenses from China face a total effective tariff of around 35%, while those from Vietnam are closer to 10%. That’s a 25-point margin no sane company would ignore.
