Viltrox has been making waves for a while, but its focus has largely been on APS-C and full-frame systems. Now, they’ve turned their attention to Micro Four Thirds, and they’re not coming to the party quietly.

The Short Answer: Viltrox has released two new autofocus primes for Micro Four Thirds, the AF 25mm f/1.7 AIR and AF 35mm f/1.7 AIR. They are adapted from Viltrox’s existing APS-C lens designs and are launching at an aggressive price of ¥899 in China, which converts to approximately $133 USD each.

This isn’t some vaporware announcement. These lenses are real, and they represent a significant new option for photographers who value the compact nature of M4/3 but have been frustrated by the price of native fast primes.

So, What Exactly Are We Looking At Now?

Let’s break it down. We have two lenses here. The Viltrox 25mm f/1.7 gives you a 50mm equivalent field of view—the classic ‘nifty fifty’. It’s the standard for everything from street photography to environmental portraits. The 35mm f/1.7 gives you a 70mm equivalent, a short telephoto that’s perfect for tighter portraits and compressing scenes without being unwieldy.

Both lenses share a fast f/1.7 maximum aperture. No, it’s not the f/1.2 or f/1.4 you see on much pricier glass, but let’s be realistic. For a system built around being small and light, an f/1.7 aperture is a fantastic sweet spot. It gives you plenty of light-gathering power and subject separation, especially compared to kit zooms, without the bulk and cost of flagship primes.

And at just 170g each, they live up to the ‘AIR’ name. This is the whole point of shooting Micro Four Thirds. I run a Nikon Z6 III and a bag full of heavy Sigma Art glass for client work, but I get the appeal of a kit you can carry all day without a second thought. Viltrox clearly understands this.

The APS-C Elephant in the Room

Here’s the part that requires a critical eye. These are not ground-up, designed-from-scratch lenses for the M4/3 sensor. They are optically identical to Viltrox’s existing APS-C ‘Air’ series primes, just adapted with a native M4/3 mount. The image circle they project is larger than the M4/3 sensor needs.

Does that matter? For the shooter, probably not. In fact, it can be a good thing. Using the ‘sweet spot’ at the center of a larger image circle often means better corner-to-corner sharpness. It’s a cost-effective strategy for Viltrox—design one optical formula and deploy it across multiple mounts. It’s smart business.

But it’s important to know what you’re buying. You’re not getting a lens meticulously optimized only for the M4/3 format. You’re getting a proven, multi-platform design at a price that reflects its manufacturing efficiency. For most people, that’s a trade-off they’ll happily make.

How They Challenge the Native Primes

This is where it gets interesting. Panasonic and OM System (formerly Olympus) make some incredible lenses. The Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 is a legend. But it also costs several times what this Viltrox does. The same goes for many of the OM System PRO primes.

Viltrox isn’t trying to beat those lenses on absolute image quality or weather-sealing. They’re attacking on price and accessibility. They’re providing an 80% solution for 20% of the cost. For hobbyists, students, or even pros needing a lightweight backup, that is a powerful proposition.

It forces a question: do you really need the extra 1/3 stop of light and the last ounce of corner sharpness for what you shoot? For some, the answer is yes. For many, many others, it’s a resounding no. This is a direct shot across the bow of the established players, proving that there’s a huge, underserved market for ‘good enough’ glass that doesn’t break the bank.

My Verdict

  • The Price is the Story. At ~$133, these lenses completely change the value equation for M4/3 shooters. They make fast-aperture photography accessible to everyone, and that alone is a massive win for the system.
  • Perfectly Imperfect. These are adapted APS-C designs, not bespoke M4/3 masterpieces. They won’t have the character or clinical perfection of a Leica or OM System PRO lens. But for their intended purpose—lightweight, affordable, everyday primes—they don’t need to.
  • More Competition is Always Good. Viltrox entering the M4/3 space, even unofficially, puts pressure on Panasonic and OM System. It forces them to innovate and perhaps reconsider their own pricing strategies at the entry level. This is healthy for everyone who shoots with this system.
